The Xi4 with a 6-inch, 168 mm width and a 300 dpi printhead choice

The 170Xi4 is the Xi4 model that prints up to 168 mm (6.6 in) wide, with 203 dpi and 300 dpi printheads offered separately. The 203 dpi model runs at up to 12 ips (305 mm/s) and the 300 dpi model at up to 8 ips (203 mm/s), and both resolutions print continuously on continuous media only up to 2,540 mm. In the same Xi4 series, the continuous print limit of the 140Xi4 and 220Xi4 is 3,810 mm, so long continuous labels are cut off first on the 170Xi4.

Sales of the 170Xi4 ended on April 2, 2018, continuing to the end of 2019 (December 31) only in the Asia-Pacific region. Manufacturer repair and technical support also closed on May 2, 2023, and on March 31, 2025 in Asia-Pacific.

Label width setting range and symptoms of a wrong setting

Print Width in the printer menu is entered as a number of dots. The 203 dpi printhead accepts 2-1,344 dots and the 300 dpi printhead 2-1,984 dots, and the factory setting is the maximum in each case.

If the width is set narrower than the label, part of the layout does not print; if set wider, print gets onto the platen roller outside the label. When switching to narrower labels, set this to the label width first.

Darkness test on the 300 dpi model (FEED self-test)

  1. Print one configuration label and note the current Darkness setting.
  2. Turn the power off, then hold the FEED button while turning the power on. Release the button when the first indicator on the control panel goes off.
  3. The 300 dpi model prints 7 labels each at 2, 6, and 8 ips, from 3 steps below the current darkness to 3 steps above it (the 203 dpi model uses 2, 6, and 10 ips).
  4. Read them with a barcode verifier or your site scanner, and enter the darkness of the label that reads best without the bars bleeding.

Same consumable specifications as the ZT620, with different label conditions

The manufacturer-designated successor, the ZT620, has the same maximum print width of 168 mm, and media width 51-180 mm, ribbon width 51-170 mm, and rolls up to 203 mm OD on a 76 mm core are the same as the 170Xi4. The upper limit of media thickness cut by the cutter is also 0.18 mm on both models. However, the ZT620 accepts label gaps only up to 4 mm, so for labels with wider gaps or tags thicker than 0.25 mm, run a test print before moving.

Sites using 300 dpi move to the ZT620 300 dpi; the top speed is the same 8 ips, but the continuous print limit is 2,032 mm, shorter than the 170Xi4's 2,540 mm.
