The DS8178-HC is the healthcare configuration of the wireless DS8178. There are two order codes: DS8178-HCMF00BVMWW, the configuration with a magnetic base, FIPS, and a vibration motor, and DS8178-HCSF00BVMWW, the PowerCap-powered configuration; both use a Healthcare White housing and a green aiming dot. The one listed with a vibration motor in the configuration table is DS8178-HCMF00BVMWW, so the vibration alerts below are based on that configuration.
The scanner weighs 237 g, and charging and PC connection are handled by the white healthcare CR8178 cradle. The reading range is shifted toward close range: the maximum 100% UPC distance shortens from 61.0 cm on the SR configuration to 40.4 cm, but in exchange it reads 5 mil Data Matrix at 4.8-11.4 cm.

The part number for the white standard cradle differs between the product reference guide and the 2021 accessory guide, so when ordering, check which of the two part numbers is currently supplied.
When seated in the CR8178-PCM00FBWW cradle, the scanner waits in object detection mode and wakes to read the moment a code is presented; the illumination staying dimly lit during this time is normal. Operate in presentation mode and charge at 0-40°C.
To mount on a monitor or medical cart, choose from 3 Creative Mounting Solutions brackets. The KN5109 mounts the presentation cradle on a monitor, the KN120G mounts the cradle together with a Zebra printer on a monitor, and the KN5110 attaches the cradle to a wall.
Sounds silenced and alerts kept in night mode
Night mode on the DS8178-HC silences 4 sounds, including the decode beep. Besides the decode beep, the sound when seated in the cradle, the sound when the Bluetooth connection drops, and the cradle page button tone are silenced, and paging leaves only the LED and vibration.
To also silence the low battery warning (4 high beeps) and the Bluetooth connection timeout and rejection tones, change the 2 night mode silence items (parameters 2262 and 2263) to "Disable in Night Mode". In that case, it alerts by vibration instead of sound.
In night mode, scanning the CR8178 cradle's pairing barcode gives a vibration instead of a beep, and it vibrates once more when connected. If the battery is removed, or the scanner is turned off with the Battery Off barcode and turned on again, night mode is released.
Vibration and silent behavior of the loss alarm (Virtual Tether)
The loss alarm is off at shipment. When on, the scanner alerts in 4 ways when its Bluetooth connection with the cradle drops: beeper, LED, illumination, and vibration. Vibration exists only on the DS8178-HC, and the cradle alerts by LED only.
A scanner in night mode, per the factory setting ("Except in Night Mode"), does not sound the alarm and turns on only the LED, illumination, and vibration. To keep alarms from sounding in patient rooms, leave this setting as it is.

The alarm sounds only when the scanner and cradle were already connected and then disconnect, not at power-on. It also does not sound when the scanner is placed in another cradle or moved with a pairing barcode, when the connection drops while loading firmware or settings via 123Scan or SMS, or when batch mode is on. Conversely, if the cradle loses power, the scanner alarms, and if the battery is removed from the scanner, the cradle alarms.
If several cradles go off at once in a power outage, all paired scanners sound the alarm. In that case, pull the trigger to pause the alarm for 30 seconds at a time (or stop it completely by changing the setting), or briefly remove the battery to turn it off.
