The DS8108-HC (DS8108-HC4000BVZWW) is the healthcare configuration that adds a pager (vibration) motor and night mode to the corded DS8108. It uses a green 528 nm aiming dot and warm white illumination, so it looks different from the red illumination of the standard SR configuration at first glance.
The housing is Healthcare White, and it weighs 156 g, 2 g more than the standard SR configuration (154 g). Approved cleaners also number 36, far more than the 4 for the standard SR configuration.
2 ways to switch to night mode
- Scan the Toggle Night Mode barcode on page 10-15 of the manual to enter night mode regardless of other settings, and scan it once more to exit.
- If trigger switching has been turned on with the Enable Night Mode Trigger barcode (off at shipment), point away from any barcode, hold the trigger until the aiming light turns off, then hold it 5 seconds more.
On entering, the scanner signals with vibration, the decode beep turns off, and vibration alerts turn on. On exiting, 2 short beeps sound and it returns to the beeper and vibration settings from before entering.
Right after reading a barcode, holding the trigger 5 more seconds does not switch modes. Scanning the Default Parameters barcode on page 10-5, or losing power when the cable is unplugged and then powering on again, leaves night mode released.
8 vibration duration settings
Decode vibration is on at shipment, with a duration of 150 msec. Choose from 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500, 600, and 750 msec with the Decode Pager Motor Duration barcodes.
While seated in an Intellistand (such as 20-71043-0BR), vibration turns off automatically, so in the stand, confirm reads by the LED and beeper.

Switching to the HC reduces the maximum UPC distance by 34% and 20 mil Code 39 by 39%. On the other hand, the starting distance for 3 mil Code 39 moves in from 5.6 cm on the SR to 3.4 cm on the HC, and the 5 mil Data Matrix row exists only for the HC.
Hospital disinfectants and conditions for bleach use
Disinfectants approved for the HC configuration are 10% bleach (0.55% sodium hypochlorite) solution, 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, 91% isopropyl alcohol solution, and some 30 hospital products such as Clorox Healthcare, PDI Sani-Cloth, Metrex CaviWipes, and Diversey Oxivir Tb. Chemicals outside the approved list are not used, and in particular, avoid chemicals Zebra lists as damaging to plastics, such as acetone, benzene, and toluene.
Use bleach-based products with gloves, and after cleaning, wipe off residue once more with a damp cloth. Metal parts such as electrical contacts oxidize when bleach touches them, so wipe them with a damp cloth right after disinfecting.
