If the content to print on the label is wider than 104 mm, choose the ZT421; if it fits within 104 mm, choose the ZT411. If you also use small labels 25-50 mm wide or need 600 dpi, choose the ZT411, because the ZT421 does not offer those.

The two models are Zebra ZT400-series industrial printers with the same body height and depth, memory, media roll, and ribbon length and core. What mainly differs is print, label, and ribbon width, top speed at 203 dpi, and the length printed continuously in one go.

The ZT421 body is more than 60 mm wider and weighs about 2 kg more. Installation dimensions and weights are listed by model on the ZT411 and ZT421 product pages.

Choosing a model by label width

If the print area exceeds 104 mm, as with 150 mm wide logistics labels or pallet labels, it is the ZT421. If 100 mm box labels and receiving and shipping labels are all you use, the ZT411 does the same job within 104 mm and is 51 mm/s faster at top speed at 203 dpi.

The ZT421 cannot load labels narrower than 51 mm. Sites that use both small labels under 51 mm wide and labels over 104 mm cannot manage with one ZT421, so they split the work across two printers or give only the wide labels to the ZT421.

When loading wide labels on the ZT421, also change to a ribbon at least as wide as the label. For 150 mm wide labels, ribbons of 150 mm or more, up to 174 mm, fit.

Resolution, speed, and continuous print length

At 300 dpi both models are the same at 254 mm/s, so the speed difference is 51 mm/s at 203 dpi. A 600 dpi printhead is an option on the ZT411 side.

For printing long labels as one piece without breaks, the ZT411 has the advantage. At 203 dpi, the ZT411 prints continuously up to 3,988 mm and the ZT421 up to about 2,590 mm, and ordinary labels with gaps between them are up to 991 mm per label on both models at 203 and 300 dpi.

Bar widths and text sizes by resolution are compared in 203 dpi vs. 300 dpi.

Differences seen with tag and RFID media

For tags with holes or notches, the media sensor has to read their position. Per the user guides, the limit for the notch or hole center position is 57 mm on the ZT411 and 90 mm on the ZT421, and per the ZT411 spec sheet, the sensor adjustment range is 1.5-71.4 mm. If you plan to use wide tags with a center beyond 57 mm on the ZT411, test with actual tags first.

For ordinary UHF RFID labels, the encoder is added in the field on both models, so choose by label width alone. Options available on only one model, such as RFID tags for metal assets, are listed on the ZT421 product page.

Consumable specifications shared by both models

  1. Label rolls are loaded on a 76 mm core up to 203 mm OD, 0.058-0.25 mm thick.
  2. Ribbons are up to 450 m on a 1-inch core, and the standard specification is ribbon wound with the ink side out.
  3. The gap between labels is 2-4 mm, 3 mm recommended.

So 76 mm core labels and ink-side-out ribbons used on the ZT411 load on the ZT421 as they are if they are 51 mm wide or more. How to choose a ribbon grade is in thermal transfer ribbon types.
